Asthma Child – What Should You Look Out For?

If you have an asthma child even though they may be able to breathe normally most of the time you can usually hear an audible whistling or wheezing sound when exhaling and they may often suffer from frequent coughing spasms. Children with asthma almost always have some amount of inflammation in their lungs even if there are no symptoms.

Children with asthma may need both a quick-relief (or "rescue") inhaler for attacks and daily medicine to control their asthma. If your child has moderate or severe asthma they should learn how to use a peak flow meter to help keep their asthma under control.

Why is there childhood asthma?

Some of the reasons given by the experts for the increase in asthma worldwide seem to be children live in areas that do not meet national air quality standards with higher levels of pollution we now live in e.g. built up areas of cities and towns. This can cause children to be more  vulnerable because of their narrow airways and rapid respiration rate.

If you have an asthma child here are some things you should know and look out for:

Parents should

  • Be alert for possible signs of asthma getting worse such as coughing at night, frequent colds, wheezing, or other signs of breathing problems.
  • What things tend to make your child’s asthma worse and how to avoid them.
  • Early signs to watch for that mean your asthma is starting to get worse (like a drop in your peak flow number or an increase in symptoms).
  • How and when to use your peak flow meter.
  • What medicines to take, how much to take, when to take them, and how to take them correctly.
  • When to call or see your doctor.
  • When you should get emergency treatment

Even if your child has been diagnosed with asthma the news isn’t all doom and gloom and for these reasons. Children with asthma nowadays usually fare better because of early diagnosis and early treatment and most will eventually grow out of their asthma. But if you suspect that have an asthma child or that your child's asthma is not well controlled, you should take them to a doctor for an exam and testing.

And if diagnosed with asthma, you will need to go to the doctor for regular follow-up visits and to make sure that your child uses the medicines properly and keeps it under control.
